I am looking at a 94 F350 7.3 turbo diesel non-powerstroke with the 5-speed and 4x4.
I asked the owner what kind of mileage he gets with the truck....he said 12. This seems a tad bit low compared to what I would expect (expected a 15ish number).
What is everyone else here getting?
Also, current owner does not know about the cavitation problem and runs prestone anti-freeze.......how much of a problem could this be? Do I need to take the coolant test-strips with me?
I get 11-12 mpg. That's with a lot mods trying to get the mileage up to what others are reporting on the site. I think driving style is a big factor along with terrain. I believe there was a specific model designed for vehicles operating at high altitude.
How many miles does the truck have? Does it smoke at all?

The truck has 169K on the clock. I have not tested the truck yet, that will happen in the next two days.
I have an 89 SC 4X4 W/5 speed manual and Banks Sidewinder System Intake, Turbo and Exhaust. Gets 15 to 16 in town if I take it real easy. 12mpg is possible driving it hard.
1994 F250 ext.cab ,7.3 factory turbo, E40D, 4.10 gear 170,000 miles. 14 mpg all around town. 16 mpg mixed. Have not run a full tank on the highway yet.
I have been consistantly getting 18mpg. That's shifting with minimum fuel and rarely getting over 70mph. I run Diesel Kleen in every tank, and once in a while I'll Through in a quart of 2 cycle oil, she really likes that.
When I first got her I couldn't get over 15mpg, but consistant use of additives and learning to shift with out winding her up made a big difference.
12 sounds low even for a 350 w/turbo. got 250 non-turbo 7.3 w/5speed and 4.10 chunks and get 17 to 18 on highway. not certain, but think that the dieselKleen and 2-stroke oil added in help a little. if c/o has not been checking rad for proper chemicals, would definitely take the strips and check. not saying that it HAS cavitation problem from running just prestone, but couldn't hurt to check what's in the rad at present.

This sounds promising...
I am currently trying to choose between an F350 that has a 460 5-speed and the IDI 7.3 turbo and a five speed.
lot's of personal reasons here, but have never had large block gasser last anywhere as long as diesel with anywhere close to the same maintenance inputs. have run large tractors w/turbo diesels that were relatively low maintenance as opposed to equivalent large gasser tractors. love the fact that diesels CAN burn vegetable oil and other bio fuels.
