I am replacing the 300 in my 1980 F150 with a freshly rebuilt one. Here is what I have for it so far.
Comp Cams CCA-236 cam kit w/timing gears
Offy DP intake Holley 390 carb
CenterForce dual friction clutch
My question is obviously about a distributor upgrade. I was going to buy a new stock version but wondered if there was something reasonably priced that is better. I don't want to spend ton of money on a MSD or something because it doesn't really need that. Should I stick with stock or go to something better? Would an Accel Super coil be a wise investment? Any suggestions?
Thank you for your replies. Are there any wiring changes the need to be made to go with a Duraspark II or do you just need to get the ignition box to go with it. I will be buying it from a parts store so what year should I be looking for and or how do I tell the difference? Thanks again for your help!
Your truck is an '80? Then your truck should all ready have the Duraspark II. For a stock system its actually pretty good & reliable. Not only that, but parts are cheap & usually right off of the shelf.

You are right. I wasn't sure so I checked and it definitely is. I am new to the F150 world so I still trying to find my way around. I will just pick up a new one at the parts store and go with an Accel coil and a new ignition box just because I am sure it is all still original and therefore 27 years old. I will be keeping the old stuff in storage though because they still work and the distributor may come in handy! Thanks again!

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:
My buddy just bought his second DUI distributor - he swears by them. They are a nice looking unit that makes for a clean looking installation. I am going to get one for my rig when the rebuild is further along...Nov/Dec.
