I have a 390 with the adjustable rockers....can somebody tell me the right procedure for adjusting the valves?? Also, what is the valve lash supposed to be set at? Thanks!!!
Rotate the engine to where the lifter you are working with is all the way down. This is best done by waiting until the other lifter for that cylinder is up, that way you are sure it is all the way down. Tighten the adjuster as you are spinning the pushrod back and forth until you feel resistance. This will get you to zero clearance. Finally tighten the nut 1/2 turn and you are done.
Is this for hydraulic lifters and solid lifters? I think the ones I have are solid. Because I took one out before I put the intake on and tried to compress the spring inside and it wouldn't move. This engine was just rebuilt so I don't think the lifter was bad. If I just grabbed the push rod and pushed down on the lifter...it should move right? Do FE's with hydraulic lifters have oil coming through the push rods? Because mine don't. This is my first FE....and none of my books cover FE's with adjustable rockers, so I'm kinda stumped here.
Good luck compressing an FE lifter without some help, they lock up pretty good. There is even a special tool you can use to compress the lifter while it is still in the motor.
There is another valve adjusting procedure in the Tech Articles within this site.
Take your time because you don't want to be bending pushrods lster on.
