The truck is the front half of an f600 the cab and trans. and engine. I could get the whole thing for $50 I just want the engine and maybe the trans. I was told it is a 390 but I am thinking it is a FT. What trans would this be I am thinking about getting the engine and trans for my F100. Is it worth having? Thanks. Eric
It would not be an FE. It is likely a FT361 or 391. While the block is pretty much the same as a FE block, the top end (heads, intake, etc.) are pretty much worthless. The crankshaft is forged (FE cranks are cast) and it will have a larger snout diameter (1.75" vs. the FE's 1.375") to accomodate a front PTO. You can have it turned down to FE dimensions, but it will still weigh a lot more than a FE crankshaft.
I don't know much about big truck trannies, but they are generally not suited to use in small trucks. I doubt there is much of value to you in that truck other than the engine block, if you need one, and since FE blocks are cheap and plentiful, it doesn't make much sense to me to buy a whole F600 just to get a block out of it.
Would most likely be a FT 330 hd the air cleaner
probaly has 190 on a sticker some where,I thought
I found a 477 or a 534.The transmission in
these can be used, do a thread search I've asked
the exact same question.the 5th gear is not an over
drive it's just more shifting to go the same
speed. Though an extra gear before the final 1:1
ratio would be handy for passing easier.
Eric, Everything there is heavy duty and heavy, not very suitable for light weight trucks. If you are wanting a 390 (good choice) they are still plentiful.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
Grab it. A 391 block can be worth the 50 bucks if you can punch it out to a 428 standard bore. I heard that some guys are doing just that. Do some checking around to verify that you can use the block and if so haul the rest of the extra parts for scrap weight.
No, and don't bother. The quickest and easiest way is just to measure the crank snout where is emerges from the timing cover. 1.75" equals FT, and 1.375" equals FE. There are also differences in the heads, exhaust manifolds and the like, but I don't know enough about FTs to be able to describe them.
I really disagree with the post about getting it for the block. You'll spend many, many hours pulling out and disassembling that engine, and the block, crank and other parts will be worth a few hundred bucks, tops, IF you can find a buyer.
Look for an oil cooler on the engine around
the oil filter area, air cleaner will have
a big snorkel,mmmm. a very small carb,
thats all I can think of. If there were head
castings I couldn't find em in the reguler spot.
The ft appears bigger I thought.A 391 cranks
out 235 hp, 361-215Hp? 330-190Hp. there probaly a
sticker on the air cleaner with one of these hp numbers.
Imagine how much grief one of these engine could
take if it were in a light truck vs a big old slugger
bus! Oh ya the ft also has rpm governers. Big oil
pans too, 8quart or something. I ve only encountered
a 330 in a f600 school bus.
You don't say what year the F-600 is. Look at the exhaust manifolds and see if there are 10 bolts holding them on, if so it is a FT engine and the heads and intake will make a good boat anchor. The crank snout may be the larger diameter but may not be if it is a 330. The 361 and 391 both have the larger snout diameter. The transmission could be a Bw T98 or Np 435 4 speed. My 58 F-600 has a t-98 and my 66 F-600 has a NP 435. I know they used the 4 speeds in F-600s up to the 70s for sure. It could also have a 5 speed with either a od or 1:1 5th. Most were 1:1, this is called a 'working' 5th. We have lots of F-600s in our area that are used for grain trucks and it is rare to see a 5 speed in one. Most have 4 spds. and 2 speed axles.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Oct-02 AT 10:47 PM (EST)]I am pretty sure that the FT's are'nt marked "352" on the block, while the FE's from 352-390 are. I remember seeing that somewhere.
I have a 330 from a 1964 F-600 with "352" on the front, and I think my 391 in my 1974 B-700 has it also, but I'm not sure.
the 5-speeds could be clarks, and they are great in smaller trucks, especially the OD models. many guys put these trans in jeeps and other "toys".
if you are looking for a race engine these are not what you want, but if you are building a stump-pulling work truck, this could be the hot ticket you are looking for.
tell us what year it is, and mabey a VIN # and engine and trans code, and we can be more help.
The engine would more then likely be a 330 361 or 391. I dont know to much about the eninges. I curntly have a 361 in my 63 half ton pickup the engine perfomers well for what I need it for. I say the engine would be a good for your aplaction I dont Know about the trans.
