I recently acquired a 86 F-350 4 door dually 4wd with a 6.9 Banks turbo and manual trans. I have a 87 F-350 4wd with a 351W in it right now I was wondering how big of a deal itis to swap the 6.9 into my 87 any advice would help and is it worth it?
Swaping the motor and trans as an assembly wouldn't be bad. Does the rad. for the 86 fit an 87 core support with any sheet metal work? I know there are differences in that department on these Fords. Example. An 83 has a different core support than an 86.
Is the front end suspension able to handle the 1000lb weight...... There may be some electrical glitches...... You may have to check if fuel tanks inner coatings are compatible gas/diesel..
I'm not really concerned with the actual putting in of the motor and trans. I am more concerned with the electrical part of the swap. Also I know that a 460 will not fit in a non 460 frame bacause of the oil filter I don't know if this is the same for the diesels. I know I have to swap the motor mount brackets on the crossmember. I kind of figured I would be changing the radiator support or makeing it work. Front end is a dana 60 with the heavy springs if not strong enough I will rebuild the springs. Also wondering if the power gains if any at all will be worth it. The 351 that I just built and put in has 350 horse and 390 ft. lbs on the dyno.

In theory, the 6.9 could deliver over 250Hp@3300 and 450-500 lbs@~1400-1800 of torque it everything is in good shape. More might be possible with fuel upgrades.
The core support is different bewteen the two trucks, and the 6.9 is roughly twice the weight of the 351w.
Take a good hard look at the crossmember on both trucks, I am almost positive that the diesel has its own crossmember.
For electrical, there isn't much to it. Just take the engine harness with the 6.9, and its pretty simple to wire everything up, since theres no electrical ignition system.
