I have a 1987 2.9 Ranger 4x4 manual and it has a simliar problem, I bought plugs, changed wires(used), cap and rotor not a bit of diffrence, i have to drive in 4th to maintain speed, this all started when i tried pulling a 1990 Jimmy 4x4 with flat tires which was sitting in the field for a couple years. its acts like it has a plug wire off, power seems to be there but its retarted somehow, where is the map sensor?

EEEWWWWW You caught general motors cooties!!!!!!!!!!! How far did you pull it and did the truck get real hot or anything? You'll need a multi meter I would check the primary and secondary resistance in the coil. The two power terminals to the coil(primary) Then check the resistance between positive terminal and the high voltage lug(secondary). See what you get with that. It wouldn't hurt to check the plug wire resistance since you put used ones on, The reading should be close to 5000 ohms per foot. The map sensor should have a vacum hose from the manifold running to it and it could be mounted on the firewall or the fender it is usually a rectangle plastic box with a wire connector and the vacum hose going to it!
I have lots of spark, got codes pulled this morning says,
EGR, TPS and speed sensor, where is the speed sensor?
I looked around on here on they say its on the transfer case,
it runs rough even at idle so that sounds strange.I thought the
speed sensor would be on the engine

Vehicle speed sensor that is I'm pretty sure a bad EGR valve or TPS could cause rough idling, I would tackle those first.
tried used sensors off a bronco, map,tps and a couple others around the throttle body
no change, havent tried EGR, no black smoke or anything at exhaust, may try
fuel filter next
pulled the EGR, got a TPS no change, runs good sometimes usually in the morning
before i go to work but on the way home from work i cant drive in 5th it shakes all over
and dosent have any power, computer?
Water in the gas!!!! a couple bottles of gas line dryer should have you running good!! Do not replace anything do not add gas, just put in gas line dryer, each bottle treats 10 gallons but you need to double or triple up on that!!! get a couple of iso heet and a couple of heet and dump them in, run it hard then let it sit overnight!!
unhooked the egr and the other stuff that plugs to it red/green vacuum lines and electrical, works good most of the time unless its hot not much power.
sputters now and then but its not that bad i can accellerate now when i couldnt before seems like its getting better as long as im easy on it
