Engine clanking noise

I have a 2001, 4.6L, F-150 Supercrew with 138,000 miles. The last several months or so there has been a clanking sound coming from the front of the engine. The noise has become deeper and appears to be loudest from the bottom. I have determined that the noise is more of a clanking sound rather than a knocking sound. In addition, I have noticed a slight intermitent loss of horsepower when accelerating from a stop as well (this may not be consistent). The clanking noise becomes more clearer when the oil filler cap is off. Does anyone have any ideas?

Crankshaft bearings affecting the run of the piston rods? Just a guess.

It could be any one of the 60 or 70 moving parts inside the engine. Your description sounds like timing chain slap, but without hearing it first hand it is impossible to say for sure.
