'90 F-250. 5.8 MT. New engine. New clutch. Full floater from an '89 F-350. When I engage the clutch from a stop, I get a clank. The rear u-joint is good. Not sure about the front. The yoke has about 1/16 to 1/8 turn back lash. Could this make the clank sound? Can I somehow shift the carrier over a bit & tighten it up or will it be a lot more involved. How bad is it really? I hauled 2100# of manure today @ 60 mph w/no problems.
If the Mazda has straight ribs and the ZF has a diamond pattern, then I have the Mazda. Billy Bob did nothing (and I mean nothing) to this truck. It is a stone-*** stock 1990 F-250 w/ a 302. I have since changed to a 351 and swapped a F-350 rear. Trans actually seems pretty good. Makes a bit of a whiny sound if I hold the shifter leftward in 1&2. Otherwise, works OK.
Still don't have an answer on the backlash, anyone?
If you have a white tag about as big as a playing card on the driver side of the trans, its a ZF. Im sure my ZF plays a role, but I always thought my clunk came from spider gear wear in the full float. With chocked wheels in neutral, I can rotate the drive shaft a little bit both ways before the slack is gone. Maybe 1/4 an inch?
Yeah, it really is the Mazda. Maybe I didn't notice it before because of the blown out muffler and broken piston in the 302. I'm guessing that the actual noise comes from the drive shaft amplifying what ever the clank is from.
Got other things going on like a mystery oil leak that'll take priority. Maybe someday I'll pull the diff cover and have a look see. Thanks guys.
