does anyone know how much horse power i can get out of my 2.9L 1990 ranger. it has acording to the factory 178hp can i make it over the 200 mark or should i get(in addition) another ranger? also i want to get a flow master exhaust system should i go with the 10 series or 40? i know they get louder over time, why is that?
While it is possible to get up to 200 hp, a better question is, how much torque do you produce and at what hp does it occur, and where do you want it to be. Torque corresponds closely with volumetric efficiency, and the best method of tuning is to try to increase this number, not hp.
HP is a time/energy relationship while torque is a measure of force. Without a turbo or supercharger, I doubt you could get to 200 hp. But you can increase the torque substantially.
the flowmasters get louder because they break apart inside. you flow alot of hot air over something, in combination with moisture and your going to get substantial rust and this ruins the mufflers from the inside out
opening the intake will give limited gain, prolly so little that you would not feel anything (the sound of it tricks you into thinking you have more power)
oh man so i dont know where i got my info before but it is 140hp not 178 this sucks even more! and i am pretty sure that nobody makes a blower for a 2.9L?
I am finding the same problems with my 2.5L four in my 99. Cost is about the same to hop up a 4.0 V6 as any of the smaller engines and you ed up with a lot more power.
Check with super six motorsports, they specialize Ford V6 engines.
