overall thoughts on the 5r100/transcommand systems
I need some feedback on this transmission. My father will be buying a new truck with the 6.4L and the 5r100 as I have gathered.
He is debating on the automatic or the standard transmission. His desire is to use this new truck for strictly pulling as it will be an F-450 and moving a bulldozer on occasion from across town or so.
I chose this forum because ya'll would have the most experience with this transmission.
How do you like the automatic? Should he go standard?
Main concern:
How good are the downshifting functions?
Strictly pulling with a 450, I would go with the manual. I love the towcommand system on my 05, but I only tow 11K. Ford played with some of the funtionality of it in some recent flashes. SCT xcal was the only way to get it back. As hard as Ford is on mods, I wouldn't put myself in that position with the 6.4. Just be prepared to put a spendy aftermarket clutch in it, (about the cost differential of the 5r100 option, so your really not out any money) once thats done, you will never fool with the tranny again.
The handshaker is a good trans, but it does not offer as high of a GCWR as the 5R110W auto. So that may be somthing that needs to be taken into consideration.
Overall, I would not think twice about choosing the 5R110W auto trans. It is very solid and works well with heavy loads.

I have been on this forum for about a year and a half and have seen maybe five threads started about someone having issues w/ their Torqshift transmissions from a bone stock truck.. Ford seems to have addressed this issue very well. GM guys can no longer brag about having a superior tranny anymore thanks to this tranny.
i think you'd be more than happy with the 5R110 (not 100 btw)
it is not even in the same league as the old 4R100 was. it is a dream to drive.
i did have a problem with mine, but that was no fault of the tranny, i abused mine with the wrong programming and power and using it in ways it was never intended. since then i have upgraded the internals and the converter and it will now tow a house
I love the tow/haul mode on our 08 F450 ambulance at work. If you just let up on the pedal, it will hold back instead of just freespooling if that's the word I'm trying to use. In my case, it's a much smoother transition than hitting the brakes every time I want to slow down.
IMO the newer programming of the 5R110 is much smoother than the older models. Our 04 F450s seemed much more jerky in tow/haul.
As far as the tow command system is concerned, I've never used it but I've heard that it's the best there is out there. Way better than any add on system.
