I just bought an 03 F-250 Super Duty Powerstroke automatic with 85k. I am pulling a 3 horse gooseneck trailer. This thing runs great after it warms but is very hard starting when cold. Takes allot of cranking and smokes for about 5 minutes. Any guesses?
If it is the 6.0L it could be sticking injectors. Try to take it in to your local service department and ask for the latest computer update which is known around here as the inductive heat strategy flash. It passes electrical current through the glow plugs to warm the oil and unstick the injectors. You may also want to check out the 6.0L forum here and look into a product called Hot Shot Secret. It is an additive that you put in and run for an oil change that helps unstik the injectors. (BTW your engine is still under warranty so this should only cost you $100 at most)
If it is a 7.3L I am not sure but I would think someone else could help you. You may want to check out the 7.3L forum.
It is a 6.0L. It was computer analyzed without any definitive indications but I would be surprized if it was with the latest update. I will pursue further with your suggestion.
Thanks!!
Sounds like you might be onto something here as this bulletin describes the symptoms pretty accurately. Also this started to happen right after I got my oil changed. I'll look into it with the dealer. Thanx!
