I have a 1997 F-150 without ABS. In the rain it tends to slip when I begin to brake. Feels pretty dangerous to me. My ? is, does anyone know if it would be possible to put an ABS system on? What would be the difficulty, can I do this myself, and what kind of cost am I looking at. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hey Sergeant. Are you sure your pick-um up truck does not have ABS Brakes on the rear wheels only? Look at your rear end. I mean your trucks rear end. You should have a plug near the top front of the housing. When you turn your key to the run position, but dont start. Do you have a yellow ABS Come on then go out? Dave
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Jul-02 AT 10:59 AM (EST)]Before I bought my new F150, I looked at a real cherry '98. I wanted 4 wheel ABS and it only had the rear wheel. It seemed logical that, in the factory, they would have a 'kinda plug-in add on. I learned it is a complete different system, and the cost and time to retrofit would have been huge.
Incidentally, this info is not just from a Ford place that didn't want to bother. I worked with a guy locally who is a real master mechanic. He has impressive credentials and writes a "car advice" column. He took the trouble to look up all the appropriate parts for me.

PS: I agree with the previous poster that you probably have rear wheel ABS. If I remember correctly, all of the "new generation" trucks do. But, if you have the "Heavy Duty" 1997, it is actually the earlier generation.
