Just look at the 2008 Superduty ...

2008 was the magic ramp-up in diesel emissions requirements...

mickelsons is right about the NOx. On-highway diesels will have to meet a stricter NOx level come 2010. The current 6.4L only meets the requirements that were set for 2007 NOx standards, which was the beginning of what the EPA is calling the phase-in period. This allows the manufacturers more time to meet the 2010 NOx standards.

How to meet 2010 NOx emissions has also been another issue between Ford and Navistar that they do not agree upon. Navistar has all intentions of using a SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system to meet the 2010 NOx emissions. Ford wanted to look at other options so owners did not have to deal with filling a urea tank, but Navistar is set on the SCR.

Part of the problem is the precious metals used as Catullus in the particulate traps to reduce the PM actually produce NOx so they have to use a secondary system after the Particulate trap to then reduce or remove the NOx that is where the urea comes in.
It is going to be a big change in how things work.

Thanks a lot Mickelsons, that is some good info. I work for an engineering firm that does a lot of work for Caterpillar, so I hear a lot about the 2010 off highway emissions stuff. Cat is coming up with some real crazy ideas, and there is some really cool testing going on.

They (The Man?) are already taking the construction machinery area to task- Holt Caterpillar is giving big incentives (up to 70% off ..YES 70%- I Wonder what kinda 'incentive' Holt is getting???) to a bunch of big outfits (120 excavators in one companies inventory) and to get this incentive they have to turn in their old equipment to be disabled- ie, big holes are punched in the crank case of the engine......wow, erm I mean WOW!
