axel information

I got a 66 custom cab with door iformation and the axel code is a 17. The tag on the rear end reads 3:11 gears but I was told there is not that gear number does anyone know what they may be?

Just for info purposes, have the NPD catalog for couple years now and only recently found they have axle code break down in back of catalog.
