Gaskets?

Hello,

I'm a novice at rebuilding an engine and I have a few questions that Steve C. doesn't cover. I bought a Victor Reinz gasket set and it has 2 timing cover gaskets? Which one do I use? Second, The head gaskets have one of the large coolant passages blocked. I see where it says Front on the gasket but why is one blocked?

Thanks
Ken

Gaskets?

The head gasket may be upside down and I used the rubber timing cover gasket in my felpro kit even though they had a paper one.

Where is the "coolant passage" at?? If it is in the middle of the head then you may be refering to the Heat riser. It is fairly common for after market intake gaskets to have heat risers blocked off. If it is for sure a coolant passage then I don't know what to say.

Scotty

This is just a "would like to know ?" It's the very front large coolant passage that is blocked by the gasket. I think it is why a lot of people put them on the wrong side. I was just wondering why Ford cut the hole durng casting when they blocked it off anyway?

Thanks
Ken

If the front holes wasn't blocked in the headgaskets you wouldn't get the proper coolant flow through the heads and it would overheat. This has happened before to others that put the headgasket on with the hole in the front.

Now that I understand what you are asking for. Sorry for the misinterp. The other reason ford machined or cast the holes in the head is so the heads could be placed on either side of the motor. Becuase the front passage on the driver side could (is) the rear passage on the Passenger side.

DUH!

Thanks Scotty. Makes you wonder if I have any business rebuilding a motor? I guess they didn't need to cut the hole in the block though.
