4:10 gears R awesome-but high EGT's
I changed the gears on my 99 F250 SD, CC, 4x4 to 4:10 gears. I have tires that measure slightly over 33 in. On a 4000 mile trip to Sturgis, then Idaho and then back to Arizona the truck would run up any steep hill @ 65 MPH pulling a 24' enclosed trailer with 2 Harleys and loaded with tools for the job in Idaho. My guess is approx. 7500 lbs. of tow weight.
The truck will pull up anything at 65 MPH with 23-24 lbs boost but the EGT's start getting up to 1200 degrees so I back off to cool it down.
What can I do to get the EGT down????? I now also get a little bit of turbo surge when it shifts back to 4th gear. Will a larger down pipe or larger exhaust help this????
I have the Banks turbo housing, wheel and exhaust on this truck but a different chip than Banks.
I picked up a little bit of fuel mileage. I always did 8 1/2 MPG with this trailer no matter how I drove it. This trip I varied from 9 - 11 MPG at 75 MPH. Averaged between 9 1/2 -10 MPG. I was happy with this. Lots of power and better fuel mileage.
Help Please

My 99 came stock with 4.10's, never had a problem.
Are you doing things in 4th that you would have been in third for otherwise?
If not, you'd think that the higher RPM's would equal lower egt's. If the lower diffs let the truck shift to 4th when it wouldn't before, and lug the motor, then that could explain it.

I tow very heavy and with a 4.88 axle. 2500 rpm at 70.
I have stock turbo with wastegate connected and functioning.
AIS or 6637 air filter depending on what mood I am in.
4" downpipe with 5" exhaust exiting in front of the rear tire. Suffice it to say the plumbing is more than adequite.
I have to tow with stock tuning or the EGT will easily hit 1300+ on a mountain pass and the WG is overcome by the volume of exhaust gasses exiting the engine and the boost is climbing to 24 or 25 psi. I've hit 27 before.
I think the only thing left to do in our case is to get a bigger turbo if we want to add fuel to the mix.
I'll pass on that one because it still won't enable me to go any faster no matter what I do, my top speed is very limited by the 4.88 gears and my money would be better spent on regearing.

I do have the AFE air filter kit on the truck. I believe it is 4" downpipe w/ 4" exhaust(whatever comes with the Banks kit). It has been 7 years since I put this exhaust on and haven't went back under hte truck to measure it yet.
The EGT's are getting up to 1200 degres in 3rd gear(automatic) at 65 MPH on 6-8% grades pulling that heavy trailer. Is 1200 degrees anything to worry about or when should I start to worry?????
My wastegate is working and opens at 28 in lower gears and holds 23-24 in 3rd at high RPM's.
I do tow in 4th gear because the truck pulls so good.

1200 is pushing it for long periods of time IMO.
When I tow with stock programming it will peak at 1150 and I never worry about that.
It's a rather interesting situation.
On the one hand you have the extra fuel for the extra power to maintain speed up that hill, but you cannot use it because the EGT's skyrocket forcing me to turn off the cruise control and apply 9/10's throttle to keep the EGT's in check. I'll crown a certain hill doing that at around 55 mph.
Program it to stock and I'll be able to leave the CC on and it will pull the same hill at 50 mph because I had to shift down, but then it never loses any speed after that.
I never operate the engine over 2500 rpm for long periods of time because it's just too noisey, the belt will start to slip because the radiator fan has locked up and it's dragging the belt down. (New belt and good strong tensioner)

I am thinking boost leak somewhere. Why? youve got a wicked wheel(banks version) and a 1.0 housing. 33" tires and 4.10 gears will basically equal out to stock 265 (31")tires and 3.73's. with the larger housing and the wheel you should be seeing more like 30PSI boost. do you have a map regulator installed? have you checked your upipes for leaks.
