I have been reading a lot about acetone as an additive for fuel to improve economy. it seems that 3 ounces per 15 ga is about the rate. Is anyone using it?
Here are the sites I have been doing some reading on. I should have included them in my initial post. The science seems sound, I don't go for the conspiracy theory though.
I've made several runs with it in my V10 Excursion, and it seemed to bring mileage up about 0.5-1.0 mpg. I've made the runs both around town and on a couple of 1600 mile (Interstate) vacation trips. My numbers come from hand calculations, too, and I am **** about filling up until I can see the fuel in the filler tube so that I KNOW that I'm getting consistent numbers. Also, I've calibrated my speedo and corrected for it's "margin of error" as a part of my comparison runs.
Acetone evaporates so quickly I don't see how this could be anything more than BS. I would also be concerned about condensation because of the speed of evaporation.

You have to measure it out in a separate container before you fill up, then at the station pour it in right before you put the nozzle in the filler neck and begin to fill the tank. That way it gets mixed in with the fuel before it has a chance to evaporate.
Use of acetone was a noticable difference for me as well. The engine was more responsive at light throttle settings and the mileage was always better. Sometimes by .5 mpg and sometimes a little more.
The biggest difference for me was in how much smoother and quieter the engine idled.
acetone is a solvent and I would not recomend it's use in diesel fuel. However, it is used to get around tarrifs on alcohol by importers so they can call it a blend for alcohols that are used by the refinerys to put in gasoline. So your gas may already have it in it.
Be overly carful with this, the wrong mixture makes for some exciting fireworks!!! Very explosive. But the levels your looking at would not be correct for the other uses of a diesel-acetone mixture....just be careful.
