I use chains all the time!

But then to, it is usually to get out a barely stuck 2wd(can't get them stuck to bad to start with), and a truck on solid ground that doesn't need to do anything more than tighten it up and give a little ooomph.
I also don't like getting my strap coverd in mud if it doesn't need to be(if only a light pull is needed), this just requires more time cleaning(have enough with the truck).B/C if the strap doesn't get the mud cleaned out of it, it will slowly rot and weaken the strap, so I always wash it after use, but don't like to so if it isn't needed, it won't be used. Just something to think about.

Now, I basically just rambled on saying the same thing different ways, but I don't know and believe chains should not be used like a strap... They have terrable shock load ratings, and BAD things can happen.

I've heard of a chain going through the cab of a truck, back seat, dash, and getting stuck in the firewall. Do you really think a headache rack and glass would stop it.

Working in the oil field, I have seen first hand the damage that broken chains and cables can cause. On our pipe spinners and Tongs for making connections (screwing drill pipe together) The forces that are exerted on the chains and cables (mostly cables) are 10s of thousands of pounds, and when one of them is unfortunate enough to let go, it can be very sad.

And about the attachment points, trailer ***** are brittle compared to other stuff and will snap off when they have force put on them in ways they were not meant to have.

Stay safe, Stay alive!

I never understand why people get defensive when you recommend a safer alternative to what they're doing. Just trying to save someone from getting hurt or worse.

Maybe we need pictures of what can happen so people will fully understand the potential danger they are in.

Exactly, we are just trying to protect somebody from themselves and they start defending their bad ideas... just dont get it.

by pictures of what can happen, do you mean an obituary cut out of a paper?

That could work. I was thinking more along the lines of the stuff they show you at driver's ed and the class they make you take when you get a speeding ticket (not that I would know anything about that.. ). Missing limbs, split open skulls. The stuff that can happen if you aren't safe out there and take precautions.

Or the classes for DUI's and 12 tickets( ).... Some bad stuff in there, but not as bad as what a chain can do.

I know chains are bad, but youre telling me that they are more dangerous than a drunk driver? what about a drunk driver trying to pull his drunk buddy out with a chain?

It was mostly a joke/ being sarcastic. But still showing a broken chain can do some real damage. A drunk driver can do worse. For instance.. Kill a innocent family of 5 driving home from a family outing.

CHAINS ARE BAD!
