Unhappy Radio quit working

I have a 1994 F150 4x2 manual shift regular cab. I recently got this truck back on the road after it sat for about 8 months. It is running great. The radio, which I never had any trouble with before, simply stopped having any sound. It was working fine, as I was driving down the road and all of a sudden there was no sound. I did not hit a bump or any pothole. The power to the radio still comes on, the station indicator works as does the indicator for volume but no sound. The clock also works. When I do turn it off and on, I can hear a very low static crack. This is the stock radio \ tape player that came with the truck. I don't want to replace the radio if that is not the problem. The speakers never showed or any type of wear such as cracking or static.

Thanks for any suggestions on where to look for the problem.

You need to start by pulling the radio. Go to a parts store and get the tool to pull that thing out. Tell me if it has two long plugs or one long one and one small square one with little wires going to it.
