I have a '05 F-350 XLT SC PSD. The rear seats fold up for "storage" wasting lots of space and leaving little room for actual storage.
My previous truck was a '99 LD 250 XLT that had rear seats that folded foward to convert to a "steel load floor" (a large flat surface),which provided alot more useable room in the back.
Does anyone know if Ford ever put seats similar to the '99 LD in the SD's?
Or would it be possible to fit seats from a 150/250 into a '05 SD without turning the truck to swiss cheese?
Or any other ideas to increase storage space without resorting to removing the rear seats?
I am also very disappointed in how the rear seat folds. I traded a 1989 F150 super cab for a 2006 F250 super cab. It is definitely a downgrade in function over the old F150's rear seat.
I carried my dog porter in the back seat folded down and it fit just perfect in my old F150. In the F250 it is a tight fit and the seat need to be move up to get it to fit at all. That was not one of Ford's better ideas

I agree also. My 1995 F-150 Supercab had a lot more room in back with the seats folded down. I was considering removing mine, since I hardly ever have anyone riding back there.
While there isn't as much room or a nice flat floor anymore I can promise you the comfort of the seat is a million times better. The back seat in my 99 was the most uncomfortable seat I ever sat in. Luckily it was my truck so I never had to sit back there very often.
If people have to sit back there i would leave it the way it is. If nobody ever rides back there I would just remove the seat.
All I mostly do is carry tools and parts back there anyway. This is stuff that cannot go into the bed, sensitive electronic test equipment and parts. I think there has only been one or two instances where someone actally rode back there, but yes, it is way more cnfortable than my old 1995 Supercab back seat.
I removed my rear seat completely, since I carried only tools and pets in the back seat. With the seat removed I installed a carpeted hinged platform (at seat height), a carpeted back panel, and boxed in the area under the platform for storage. I now carry tools, accessories (jumper cables, hand tools, flares, air compressor, etc) and a 2000w inverter mounted under the platform, and larger items sit on top of the platform. When traveling with the wife and pets, the pets ride on the platform and everyones happy.
I used the original seat mounting hardware to mount the boxed in platform and the rear panel. I had to cut a hole in the rear panel to allow for the power sliding rear window motor. I covered the hole and motor with a routed out piece of wood finished to closely match the wood grain of the dashboard.
I doubt seriously I will ever put the rear seat back in, at least for the foreseeable future. It currently resides in the loft of my shop.
I'm going to look into making a platform/box (thanks c.f. moore) on the "longer" side and keep the the "short" seat. In the mean time I'll probably just do like Jomac11 suggested and take out half the seat.
Too bad the seat back isn't split like the seats are.
