diesel swap

So I might be purchasing an 86 f250 with a 302. I have always wanted a diesel so I started thinking about a swap. I have read where there are some older diesels that only require a power wire to the pump and a few other misc connecetions to get them running. What would be my best option for performing a swap like this. Keep in mind the truck I will be getting did not hasve a diesel so I have no wireing harness. Im not looking for total brute power so a smaller diesel will be fine. Im just looking for a simple diesel swap. Is it even possible

thanks

easiest swap would be a 12v cummins motor.

so how involved is a diesel swap. I have done plenty of gas swaps but never messed with diesel. Is it true that some diesels require very little in the way of wireing harnesses etc. If im gonna have to mess with making up or cutting up a wireing harness ill just stick with gas. However if I can just wire up a pump and the necessary accessories I might consider a diesel

I read some where that 98 or earlier cummins (I think), only need about 3 or 4 wires hooked up to actually run, A 12v constant, ground, fuel on and start

Well the 12 valve cummins and 6.9/7.3 IDI in Fords both needed a minimum of wiring since they were mechanical engines.

Cummins is turbo, the IDI is not. IDI's came in that model truck so I would think that would be the most direct swap, but I dunno. It would certainly be down on power compared to the cummins, but I bet you could get an IDI a lot cheaper.

BTW I saw your other post over on the Dodge forum...

The 6.9 and early 7.3 along with the 5.9 mechanical cummins only "have" to have power to the solenoid on the injection pump to run. The other connections would be for oil pressure, water temp.

None of those engines will bolt up to the existing trans behind the 302. A C-6 out of a 6.9/7.3 would be a direct bolt on. The gasser big block C-6 will NOT bolt up to the 6.9/7.3

The cummins 5.9 is not exactly the same as the 5.9 that Dodge uses. There are differences in the intake, exhaust, turbo, rocker cover. About any cummins 5.9 you use will need an adapter for whatever trans you use.

the best and easiest swap wound be a pre 93 ford diesel.
if you can find a wrecked truck, this will give you just about all you will need to do the swap.

yeah I was aware that the gasser trannys would not bolt up. I plan on replacing the engine and tranny all in one swap. Im just trying to stay away from a wireing nightmare. So from what I have been reading as long as I stay with a pre 93 ford diesel I should be fine. Is that a correct assumption

I would also like to stay away from a turbo setup if possible. I have no idea about how to set up a turbo

Yeah I knew that the gasser trannys would not bolt up to the diesels. If I were to go with a diesel, Whatever brand I would be swapping out the tranny as well. I just want as simple of a swap as I can get and avoid a wiring nightmare. Im also trying to avoid a turbo since I have no idea how to rig up one of thoes.

So from what I have been reading as long as I stay with a pre 93 engine I should be ok. Is that correct. I like the idea of just needing a power wire for the injector pump and setting up the alternator then im good to go.

Early IDIs and mid 90s cummins should all be very simple 2-4 wire hook ups.
