What I find amazing is the amount of aircraft wreckage strewn in the Sierras.
I didn't realize that there was that much.
They keep on finding wreckage, but it's not Fossett's.
What's really amazing is that they are suddenly able to find all of these wrecks that they were previously unable to find. If I remember correctly it is over 100 crash sites that the FAA will now go investigate, possibly giving some other families some understanding of what happened to their loved ones.
ELT's are great as long as they are maintained. It could also be that the plane impacted hard enough to destroy the ELT.
and not filing a flight plan???
my pops flies and respects what this man has accomplished, but your a complete MORON for filing a flight plan.
maybe this is some stunt hes pulling off.
upon impact or hard landing his transmitter will automatically send a gps signal. that hasnt happened.
he wears a watch, that with a twist of a turn its a gps locating devise. thats didnt happen either
ELT's send a radio signal that can be picked up by a radio receiver or satellite but unless he had one of the new 406 MHz ELT's they aren't GPS equipped. Most small planes would still have the old 121.5 ELT.
I fly quite often without a flight plan and I am far from a moron. It isn't required for VFR flights. A good idea, but the guy is/was an experienced pilot and was familiar with the area. Besides, radar coverage out there is probably horrible so even with a flight plan they wouldn't have known where the heck he was.
why the hick would u leave for a flight w/4 hrs of gas and a weeks worth of food and water hummmm something is fishy!
I think if he did have a weeks worth of food and water on him, he was just showing his expertise in survival. An emergency landing out there and you would need to plan on a week before they find you. Food, water, a weapon and flare gun would be minimum equipment.
If he's alive and gets rescued, I bet he will have a hell of a story to tell.
i read somewhere that when you fly over that, the wind gusts that may come up all of a sudden, can throw a small plane around like a leaf. i was like no wonder alot of planes have gone down even without malfunctions or severe weather
Some of those gust have been known to throw around some of the big aircraft also.

That's because of the amount of search aircraft looking for Fossett.

Exactly my point - no expense spared to find a multi-millionaire daredevil while no telling how many people were left to rot out in the desert.
I certainly hope he is alive so we can hear what happened even though no matter how convincing his story one will always have to wonder if this is a staged stunt.....
I have to believe that his chances of coming out alive are slim and none. Was reported he had a wrist watch that he could activate a locator. If it isn't activated by now then I'd have to think he is dead.

A woman wrote of an experience she had in a small plane about 30 years ago. She and two others crashed 15' below the summit of a mountain ridge just west of Independence Ca. After the other two died she hiked down that mountain to safety. Her book was called, "And I Alone Survived." A movie was made out of it. Can't remember her name. A good story.

Thats her. I would have Googled her but I was lazy. I often wonder if her plane is still there.
Helen Klaben had experienced a small plane crash in the Canadian wilderness in early 1963. Her book was, "Hey, I'm Alive!" Also made into a movie. Another good story. Her plane is still there.
Carole Lombard had experienced a plane crash west of Las Vegas in 1942. She didn't write a book. Parts of her plane are still there.
West Nevada and east California is probably covered in plane crashes. I hope Fossett walks into a town saying, "Man, am I thirsty!"
Two movies, I think. Several books. I'm glad I wasn't on that plane. There's a lot of meat on my bones. It's amazing how much the human body, mind, spirit and heart can endure.
As a 14 year aircraft mechanic I can say for certain, There ain't no old bold pilots. I also live about 30 minutes from the Blue Ridge mountains and there are planes up there that go all the way back to ww2. What is done in that area to stop finding the same airplane over and over is to paint the top of the wings yellow.
It should work in the Sierras, too.
One of our places is called End of the World. I know of one C141 and 2 helicopters in there.
As a young airman in the '50s, stationed near Sacramento, I was on 2 search flights hunting an F86 that was only about 5 or 10 minutes from McClellan AFB when it disappeared and as far as I know it was never found.
There sure seem to be alot of planes that dissapear never to be found again out there, with the amount of searching done for lost planes it makes me wonder ..... maybe it's all a big conspiracy and those planes never crashed
But to get back on topic I hope that they find him, but I seriously doubt they ever will.

I think those missing planes were beamed up by a Star Ship, then beamed to Area 51.
