Wipers do nothing when outside temp is low. As in when I go to work in the AM.
When the outside temp. warms up everything works fine. It makes no since to me, but I have to fix it. I tried cleaning the stalk switch which did nothing.
I hate to start replacing stuff without knowing what the problem is. Any suggestions would be great.
I would check the plug on the motor itself. Unplug it. look it over, and plug it back in. You may also want to wiggle it and or the wiring around when the temp is low.
OK, tried all that, nothing. It stop being temp controled also. I Replaced the colum stalk (70.00!) and still nothing. Went over the fuses, nothing. I Guess the next thing would be relays?
What I dont understand is it is all or nothing. There is no say, park only malfuction, or run only, or washer only...its all or nothing!!
I have to get it fixed as we have a storm coming in tues
With the key in run, you should have 12 volts on the white/black wire at the motor.
With the key on, and the wipers off, you should have 12 volts on the lightblue at the motor.
With the key on, turn the wiper switch to on (not interval) and you should have 12 volts on either the white or the or the darkblue orange. One is low speed and the other is high speed.
You are correct, these functions are controlled by relays in the underhood fuse box. If the relays are not clicking, then the next stop is the GEM module. It's what controls the relays. The GEM module gets resistance signals from the switch in the column, and interprets these to control what relays click on and off, and this is what controls the motor.
The GEM is probably a dealer only item. It think it's pretty expensive too. You might want to pull it out, unplug it, and look it over and plug it back in to see if the problem changes or goes away. I believe it's mounted on the firewall, on the inside of the cab, around the steering column area.
While you are in there, look for any water damage around the GEM, and the fuse box. These trucks were famous for a windshield leak running down the inside of the firewall, and corroding the fuse box and damaging the GEM. Usually the first indicator the GEM has water damage, is the domelights and the door locks don't work right.
It is a dealer part, as no one local can get it. I havent called to price it thru the local stealership, but worse than that I cant seem to locate it?????? Ive looked everywhere under the dash around the steering colum and on the firewall also..i'm stumped.
OH and the dome light hasnt worked since I bought it. Sounds like it, eh?
They show it mounted at an angle on the left hand side of the steering column, between the column and the driver's side kick panel. It looks like a large black box with at least two plugs coming out of it. In this picture(which is pretty lousy) it may not be mounted on the firewall, but possibly to the backside of the dash, I can't really tell.
