Hi, i have a 1991 ford f-150 4x4 regular cab with an AOD. About 10,000 miles ago i took a 650 mile trip and on the way im pretty sure the overdrive band burnt out. The fluid level was fine, so im not sure what caused it except for the 8+ hours of straight driving. Anyways, i havnt had the money to fix it since, so ive just been riding around in drive (3rd gear) and it shifts fine. There's also a winding noise that comes from the tranny every now and then, especially if i leave o/d on. My question is would it be a better idea to get mine rebuilt, or to go buy a used one? i know where i can get one out of another truck; but i have no idea what sort of condition it was in before the truck was junked...Also, would it help mine any to change the fluid/filter, or is it pretty much a lost cause? Thanks for the help!
AOD links. Read their stuff, they beef them up plenty. Some kit parts too for rebuilding on the kitchen table.
I've seen what an auto trans looks like taken apart, so no matter what, I would be going to a reputable trans shop. (if there is such a thing, I guess....)
I would change the fluid out! It's worth a shot! With the addition of big tires(if you have them bigger than stock), You should consider that a special operating condition so changing out the fluid every 30,000 is needed!! Do the trans fluid check, Take a piece of paper towel and take out your dipstick let it drip onto the paper towel in one spot, Then wipe off the dipstick and put it an a bottle of new trans fluid to the same level that was on the dip stick(so you get roughly the same amount) and on a different spot at least 5" away from the first spot let it drip. You will see the fresh fluid spread out into a big circle, The old if it is really bad will hardly spread at all. After using this method for awhile you will get an idea of the relation of old fluid and how much of a change is needed by the spread of the fluid!
