Lawn Dethatcher?
Has anyone here ever used one of those non-powered lawn dethatchers that you pull around behind your mower? Do they do a good job?

No, not quite. A dethatcher has around two dozen wire tines that pull through the grass supposedly catching the thatch and flinging it up so it can be collected by a sweeper.

I have one that I bought at Lowe's for around $80. I put 4 bricks on it and it works amazingly well. Without the bricks it just bounced around a lot.
I have a 1/2 acre lot and I dethatch once a year. When I did it this past spring I made a pile about 6' tall so it definitely gets the thatch out.
You don't have any idea how badly I wanted to throw a match in the pile....

Yessir!!!!!
I used mine yesterday!
I've had this de-thatcher for about 20 years.
I use two 5-gallon containers that have tight fitting lids and vent caps and fill them with water from the spigot, for extra weight.
The wheels are adjustable for the height of the 'tines'. I set mine so that I get the most effect from the 'tines'.
I haven't rented a de-thatcher since I bought this one.
After using the de-thatcher, I put the bagger on the riding lawn mower, and pick the thatch up using the mower.
(With my beat-up body, I don't rake.)
Works great!!!!!!!

I have one also. I use 2 cinder blocks on mine to keep it from jumping all over the place.

I guess the first question would does it really need the tines or aeration? The type of areation would be removing the core from the ground. Also if do use a tow behind weigh it down. I would go over the lawn twice, 90 degree to each other.
In cool season turf it may (depends on condition of grass) need to be done in the spring.
