Question direct push button start... will it work? is it safe?

here's my issue... anti-theft monkey business is making starting my truck impossible to start until i luckily hit the right combination of buttons or wait it out.

here's my idea for a solution... since i can jump the solenoid with a screwdriver, why not just run some wires right from the solenoid up to a momentary button mounted on the dash.

i don't have to worry about someone stealing it, and i don't mind having to turn the key and then hit the button.

1. electrically, how safe is this?
2. how many amps and volts should the button be rated for?
3. am i missing something obvious?

thanks,
eric

Eric, where did you move your comment to? I've been wondering the same thing myself about push buttons for starting an engine. I'd like to find out more about that.

i posted the same thing in the electrical forum. not much response. since my question, i just went ahead and did it. 12 gauge wires from the solenoid terminals up to a 60 amp momentary-on button that i mounted in the cab. no fuses, no switches, and most importantly no fires. oh yeah- no trouble starting either. it's nice to know i have that backup in the event the dang thing doesn't want to start with the key.

are you having similar issues, or do you just want a button starter?

apologies for the unabashed abuse of the exhaust forum bandwidth!

cheers,
eric
