I am ready to install a new 4" MBRP T409 stainless Turbo back exhaust and a set of pillar guages including Pyro, boost, and trans temp. What is the best location and way to install the pyro thermocoupler. I have read a thousand different ways to install the thermocouple on the manifold: using grease, no grease, engine running, removing exhaust manifoud, magnet, and a vacume. Would i get and accurate readings if i weld a nut to my new stainless down pipe right at the turbo flange and mount the thermocouple their or is it a bad idea, only good thing i was told was that if the thermocoupler broke it would just blow out the exhaust and not get eaten by the turbo but how often dose that actually happen
Hey im inthe same situation right now, gonna straight pipe it next week..4" turbo back...Im thinkiing since the new down pipe will be easy to work on since its out of the truck, just drill and tap right behind the turbo. Just compensate for the temperature, If I remember correctly, pre to post turbo is like 200 degrees or so....
Post turbo varies greatly from pre turbo...all depends on the load on the motor....post turbo will read 0-450* cooler depending on the situation from what I've seen. More load on the motor...greater the difference.
I'd just do the manifold, it's not hard. All I've ever done is drill with the right sized bit, tap use a small magnetic to get any shavings that don't fall on me, install the thermocouple and run.
i've done both the clamp on my truck and a buddies truck.. and drill&tap on another buddies truck.. both ways work the same.. i found taping was a little more tricky than the clamp style.. my method prefered is the clamp styly on the manifold drivers side on the back of the manifold.
just drill and tap the manifold. the clamp is the lazy way out. do it right, it's not that hard.
you dont need any grease.
start the truck, let it idle, drill the hole. tap the hole. shut the truck off.
install the pyro.
you're done
If your installing a double gauge; drill & tap the cast iron header and drill and clamp the one after the turbo. A right angle drill attachment from Harbor Freight make this easy as the area around the discharge of the turbo is tight...Good Luck.
Now last but not least, which side manifold is best to install the thermocoupler in. I have read that most people seem to find when their motors fail due to a melt down it seems to be the passangers side pistons that melt first, I am sure it dose not matter thaat much just wondering if any one has a preference for temp. readings and accessability to install the sensor
