Dangerous Steering Problem- help?
In the last 6 months or so, I've noticed a lot of play in the steering of my'91 Explorer- it has 199k kms. But lately it's gotten a lot worse, and I'm not sure what the problem might be... I recently did the front brakes, rotors and bearings, and making sure they were tightened properly helped a bit, but not much. I do need to do the shocks, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to the cause/other things to look out for.
It's bad enough that I can turn the steering wheel nearly a full quarter turn before the wheels respond, and I'm a bit hesitant to drive it in the rain...

91's don't have rack and pinion - check the pinch clamp on the steering column where it slides into the intermediate shaft (about in line with the master cylinder). if it has loostened up it can cause the symptom. there are two more connections between there and the steering box. If they are all tight, try wiggling the pitman arm on the bottom of the steering box - maybe it's splines or the steering box are worn.
