oil pump shaft problem

oil pump shaft problem
Hey. What's up? I was wondering about something. I have a 390 in my ford and just recently i took apart my heads and manifold and put them back together. The thing is, why i was doing that, the oil pump shaft fell from the distributer. At the time, i wasn't sure what it was but than it clicked. I dropped my oil pan and i found it right in the oil pan. Know a couple things. How does it go back? Do you drop it down from where the distributer hole is or take off the oil pump off and go from there. Just wondering.

John, there is supposed to be a little clip that goes on the oil pump shaft that keeps it in the oil pump when the dizzy is removed. Sorta like a star washer. Sometimes this clip breaks or slides down the shaft letting the shaft come out of the oil pump. I would replace the clip and drop the oil pump to put the shaft back in so it won't happen again.
