are you not sure if you have a Cleveland or a 351M/400? the 351M and 400 are visually identical but the Cleveland is different. is this engine the original to the vehicle? US trucks never came with a Cleveland, only the M/400. if the engine is believed to be original, what is the 5th digit of the VIN? if not we can go from there.

f26sr is the first five it is believed to be a cleveland because of the number of bolts in the valve covers. a cleveland has 8 and the m has six? let me know this truck might be rare

the "F" in script in front of the VIN doesn't count, that's the first 4, what's the next digit? is the engine believed to be original to the body? Cleveland and 351M/400's use the same valve covers, so same bolt count. you can't tell them apart that way.

Cleveland uses a small block bell pattern,the 351m/400 uses the 429/460 style bell.

Sorry about that, you're right. Haven't been on here a while... Starting to forget things...

Difference between a 351M and a 400, measure the stroke, like mentioned in OP.

Difference in 351C & 351m, search. I did and one of the first to pop up was this:

It's a 400 by the VIN.

F26 = F250 4WD

S = 400 2V

R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant

351C/351M/400 all have 8 valve cover bolts.

The F does count. What he posted is correct.

ok, the truck vin might be different. i was going by the Ranghero/car vin digit placement, where the engine would be the 5th digit. "R" didn't ring any bells. thanks.

The Ford trucks 11 digit VIN's from 1957 through 1980 began with an F in most cases. The cars 11 digit VIN's began with a number denoting the year thru 1979.

Samples from 1965: Cars: 5RO2C123456 / Trucks: F10DR639123

Cars went to 17 digit VIN's in 1980, trucks in 1981.

mesure the crank stroke or look for a ridge on the first conterweight.351m don't have it.
400 does.351m/400 motors have a taller deck height by 1".
