I figured it was finally time to join this forum since i am frequently visiting. So i've got a cleveland just rebuilt it and it sounds like shes backfiring but right now i've just got headers nothing behind them, so i can't tell if it is just the normal running or if its backfiring. She doesn't sound too bad at idle but when i give her some gas she starts to "backfire" occasionaly i will hear an odd sound and she will shut off. My timing is practically dead on. Its a 2V Cleveland with an edelbrock intake and carb. Plugs are getting unusually black, but i figure that it is just residue from early attempts at getting her to start with too rich of a setup. This seems like a problem i was having with my 302, which is why i pulled it in the first place. Well let me know what you think.
Thanks!

I had that combo on my 2v 351c, does the exhaust burn yer eyes ? sounds like yer way rich on the carb, email edelbrock, they will get you real close on the proper jets and rods for your set-up.
sounds like a good idea. I think she is running way too rich. Im going to clean the plugs lean her out as far as she'll go and run my coil wire straight to the battery, i think that the 12V on from the harness is going out. I might be getting a delayed spark from the coil. This has to be my least favorite part....how many times in our lifetimes do we have to do this! haha
Too lean aint good either.... e-mail or call Edelbrock with yer compression ratio, cam specs, carb cfm, Headers or not, bla bla bla- they will tell you what to run fer jets and rods.
now that i think about it someone might have knocked some of my plugs onto the ground a while ago. I think i remember finding them on the ground, and assuming someone had moved them there. You think if they fell or got dropped that could ruin the ceramic or anything else?
well we were right too rich...second off: 3 and 6 plugs the gap was too small... WAY too small... i just barely set them not too long ago... im hoping that the piston didn't collide with them. Thats why it was an occasional backfire only two cylinders were back firing. they were burning too slow and then when the adjacent pistons fired while running rich all that unburnt mix was ignited! woo. now i know im just a little concerned about the plugs.
