I am leaning towards the power steering swap and crossover, or buying a ram and swapping it in place of the old ram and hope it works, just to get me by. I will go take a look at the power steering pump and see what all I would need to do to get it swapped in.
What if I drop the spool valve, and use a metering valve attached to the steering column, and use a better ram? How does that valve attach and work? I am probably way off, but it sounds like it would eliminate the manual box, and I would run hydro lines from it to the ram...?
You have a good memory. Yes I live in So CA.
Long road trip for just a rear axle. Might have to get some wheelin in to justify a trip all the way down here. LOL.
Good luck with the swap. Sounds like the truck is coming out real nice.....
It is leaking from the end of the ram. I looked, and can't see any type of oil seal in there, it is probably completely gone. I can't remember the brand of oil off hand, it's the spendy stuff that comes in a red bottle.

Ah, I'd love to come down there and check out some of those trails..
Looks like a lot of people don't really understand the setup you've got. Actually not a bad design except for the non serviceable ram. It's good in that each component is separate. No need to tap box's or anything like that. You really only need to replace the ram. Any ram can be used so long as it has the right length of stroke(rams can have sleeves placed on the rod to reduce it's stoke if necessary). Just a matter of bracketry. The valving won't care less. Don't go too much bigger in diameter than stock or it will be slow to turn with slow engine revs.(powerful still) You could even use the ram you want to use on the D60 later.
Don't mess with the valve if it is working ok.
You could also try and increase the pump pressure. Usually there will be a spring loaded valve in the pump body. Placing a shim between the spring and the plug holding it in should up the pressure some. Bit trial and error as to how thick a shim though. Eventually, with those 42"s and stronger steering, you'll break something though.............
I should also add, that your existing steering box and the valve should work just fine on a D60 too. That setup can potentially steer anything. Just a matter of ram and pump sized to suit. No need for power steering box or massive pitman arm/rod.
Lol this is funny... At work we have a 73 Kenworth. No power steering, just air assit. I never knew they did that with pick-ups. That set up looks exactly the same as the one on the Semi. Well, ill let ya'll get back to your post. lol
