I am installing a 351 in an early bronco. The bronco has a c4 tranny and it appears that the torque converter sticks out too far for the flex plate to bolt up. The 302 cranck has a hollow spot in the center and the 351 does not. I pull the motor out a third time and measure but I was wondering if any one could giv me an answer. I want to get it done and if I need to get a torque converter i will order one right a way. This project has been waiting for nearly a year and I want to use it in two weeks.
How far out is do you think? How many tooth flex plate? There is spacer that goes between the engine and bell housing that is .060 thick! You might want to get a lower stall speed torque convertor if that one is from the 302 or else you might be out of the torque band, not to mention you probably have bigger tires and gears and all! Just a thought!
The windsor had a standard tranny and it was the pilot bushing. I figured this out as soon as I asked this stupid question. I am interested in the torque converter stall thing I don't know if I need a different one. The tranny was rebuilt not to many miles ago and has a shift kit. I changed the gears in the differentials to 410s and with the tired 302 it chirped 33 inch tires going into second. I think it will be fine.
Bolt it up and do a brake check if that 351 is revved way up before it overcomes the brakes. You will need a lower stall convertor! This is assuming you got decent brakes!
That converter may stall a little higher than it did behind the 302, but not much. This is just from the added torque from the larger engine. It will be fine.
If it stalls too high he will be out of the peak torque of his motor and the performance will suffer overall!! The 351 hits peak torque way before the 302. (lower rpms) Too much slip with too much power will heat up the fluid, torque con and trans leading to early failure, Not to mention the motor turning uneeded rpms which leads to motor wear. If you did all that work, to do it again than run it like it is! Or run it for awhile then get the right convertor for the job.
I am going to run it i will let you know. The midwest bronco club is having an outing near my house I will have it ready. This will be the 22-23 weekend. I have alot to do. I am also very busy with work. As far as brakes I have four wheel discs. It never would do a brake stand before.
maybe i will have to replace the torque converter. I say I already have it bolted up and can always try later. I feel I am getting better at pulling this motor in and out. it is not like I need to drive it over winter I like to keep it in the garage for the winter anyways.
