You can pick up key fobs on eBay. But since you don't have one, I'm pretty sure that you'll have to go to the dealer to get it programmed. I think you need two working key fobs to program a third.

upgrade to a carbine alarm system, they have a lot of options, ive had two 2000 f150s and had carbines on both of em, saved me from theft at least twice! check out the carbine alarm systems, they are reasonably priced too!

Since you have an XLT, do the programming entry procedure to determine IF you do have remote locks. If you do then fobs are readily available on eBay. You DO NOT need 2 working fobs to program a 3rd. Thats PATS keys matty6 is thinking of. You can start with no fobs and program up to 4 for your truck.

ncranchero is right. You don't need any working ones to program new ones. I just did this exact thing on my truck. I bought two remotes off of ebay for less than $10 each.

To tell if your truck will work with the remotes or not, you have to put it into program mode. Put your key into the ignition and turn it on and off 8 times in less than 10 seconds, finishing with the key in the 'on' position. If your truck supports the remotes, the locks will lock then unlock. If they do that, then you're good to go.

Once you get your remotes, you would push a button on each of the remotes while the truck is in program mode and the truck will lock and unlock the doors each time to acknowledge that it's accepted the remotes.

I'm not trying to hi-jack the thread here
But I have a used 97 F150 and I know my remote is not a ford remote (it has a trunk button and the buttons are plastic instead of rubber.)
I need a new fob b/c the 2 haves readily come apart with no effort and I've lost batteries due to the 2 halves coming apart so easy.
What is the programing sequence for a 97? I tried turning the key 8 times in 10 seconds and round 5th or 6th time the doors locked & unlocked real quick. Then the remote worked as usual.
If I mash the lock button once the doors lock & the alarm is active, if I mash it twice the horn honks and the headlights flash (foglights & blinkers do not).
If a door is open or ajar and you hit the lock button twice the horn honks twice to signal an open door.
Does this sound like I have a factory ford fob system?
If so do I have to by a specific 97 key fob or can i get like a 2000 w/ the pictures on the buttons instead of the words?

THANKS!

Sounds to me like you've got the right remote for your truck. Here's one listed to be a factory ford one that sounds exactly like you describe yours: eBay

They changed in '98, I believe. The programming sequence was different, though. Check your owner's manual or do a search. I'm sure somebody's posted it.

zman here the sequence from the '97 service manual.

Programming

NOTE: All keyless entry remote transmitters must be programmed at the same time.

To program (or reprogram) the keyless entry remote transmitters into the RAP module, perform the following steps:

1. Make sure that the anti-theft system is not armed or triggered.

2. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to RUN five times within ten seconds, ending in RUN. If the RAP module has successfully entered program mode, it will lock and then unlock all doors.

3. Press any button on a keyless entry remote transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed.

4. If the door locks do not respond for any keyless entry remote transmitter, wait several seconds and press the button again. If the door locks still fail to respond, refer to Diagnosis and Testing in this section.

5. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, or wait up to five minutes after step 2, to exit program mode. If a keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed (or reprogrammed), the RAP module will lock and unlock all doors one last time to confirm.
================================================== ========
Here's the fob references I have. The '97 is not listed here though.
