Does anybody have any idea which gas tank from another vehicle will bolt up to a '56(under the bed, that is)? I know I can buy an aftermarket type, but prefer one from my local-shall we say- used parts purveyor.
I think I once read that a certain Toyota truck will fit with a slight modification.
I have a 31 gallon tank from a Chevy K5 Blazer that bolts up under the bad. Many use Mustang tanks but those do not have the large capacity that I was looking for.
There are several articles written here in FTE. Do a search and you'll find them all. Jiolon has a great one on installing a Mustang tank. I just installed a aluminum aftermarket tank which I really like and was fairly easy to install with little fabrication. Just my 2 pennies.
As stated in the threads; www dot gastanks dot com is a good resource giving dimensions for all the after market tanks.
If looking at Mustang tank, make sure you order correct one; I used 70-74 mustang tank, it came with "extra" opening which I will fill. I also used strap kit, some have fabbed frame to mount tank.
You can also use an early Isuzu Trooper tank as well. I think there might have even been a magazine writeup on this a few years ago. There's some info here if you search +trooper +tank
Goobzilla, that's the one I was thing of. I said Toyota, but it was the Isuzu! Thanks.
Tip, I wanted to get by without using an aftermarket type as I much prefer scrounging the...uh...pre-owned type places. Down south we call them junk yards.

Be careful getting a tank from a junk yard. I'd advise you to take it to a radiator shop and have them hot tank it and maybe coat the inside. Plus they check for leaks. Alot of tanks in the junk yard have rust in them among all the other stuff that collects inside the tanks. A new tank from some of the places mentioned here aren't that expensive and you may put that much money into cleaning up an old tank from the junk yard. But if your determined to have a pre=owned. I say go for it.
The gastank site is a guide line for measurements only; then you can go directly to junkyard, do not pass go, but collect tank of choice. Just a thought.
i got a good deal on a 65 or 66 mustang tank on the last day of a car show. went in pretty easy. a little trimming on the frame rail and fabbed up a bracket. but all in all it was a pretty simple task. thanks to john.
All good info, guys! I hadn't thought about the flushing, leak checking, sealing, etc, etc, but I'm old, so I can get by, can't I?
Thanks again. Dang, I like FORD people.
