Eratic Idle??

I'm trying to figure this out! I first noticed this happening when I would come to a hard stop, the idle will drop to about 500 rpms and somtimes stall. Then I noticed today while sitting in the driveway, that if I hit the brakes hard the idle would also drop/fluctuate. Almost stalling. Back ground info. I checked for clogged return lines. I removed the lines at the pump and at the filter housing and cleaned them both out, just to make certain. I also decided to run a test on the pump while I was there and the lines were removed. Cycling the key I ran 4 test's. I got 17 ounces +/- at each cycle. Is this with in specs?.. I also changed the oil on thursday just to rule this out as well. Shell Rotella 5-40 Synthetic. This is what I have always ran so no change there. Found one of my uppipes leaking, (D.S)so I fixed it yesterday as well. I know my EBPS line is leaking so I'm going to make a knew one tomorrow. I also installed a knew fuel filter while I had the system apart. Primed the fuel housing, and fueled up my truck to see if maybe I was sucking air as I only had a 1/4 tank. Well my problem still exist's. Any suggesttion are welcome. Thanks Country.

Sounds like a couple different problems, the one about the stalling coming to a hard stop could be your Torque converter not unlocking all the way which is a bad sign. As for the brakes and idle im not sure, good luck someone else will chime in

only thing I can figure with brakes making RPM drop is something in power steering pump like pressure relief valve sticking but should do the same if you turn steering at idle

Now this sounds like a good place to start. I haven't changed any programs what's so ever so I think it safe to rule out a program fault. It just started doing this acouple days ago. Well I do have a brand knew PSC steering pump in a box in my garage. Maybe it's time to install it in my turck. I would like to know for sure if it is in the steering pump. Well I have a knew oil pump and ipr too. TC is an ATS and is about 7 months old. And it does seem to be working fine also. Thanks for the reply's also. If yah come up with anything else please let me know. Thanks Agian. Hey John ! Did yah get your mail yet? Country

The little *******s, first they knocked it over, okay dig deeper, harder to knock over. They knocked that over, okay, they are smart, so we cemented that SOB into the ground, and whoever it was, must have gotten real mad when they hit it with their car and it didnt move, so they used an axe. It wasnt just me, it was my whole road, but they targeted ours after we dug it deeper making it harder to knock over. I want to put a mailbox back up, and catch them in the act, then watch them fry through the courts for a federal offense of knocking over mailboxs.

I had a similiar situation last fall twice.

1)one battery was bad and was pulling the other battery down with it, when the truck was at idle I guess the bad battery was sucking so much juice from the alternator it caused a rough & low rpm idle.

2) One month later the truck would Idle just fine in Park or Nuetral but, when I had it in Drive or Reverse it would bog down and idle a few 100 rpm lower (with an ocassional rattling from the TC - like marbles in a coffee can). Does your truck also have the erratic idle in Nuetral? When your coming to a stop light you can try puting it in Nuetral before hitting the brakes and see if you get the same idle problem. This time it wound up being my torque converter. I guess it wasn't unlocking completely - shortly after it chewed itself up. Luckily I bought it from BTS and Brain sent me a replacement.

I have no idea if your situation would be the same as mine, just wanted to throw you some options to check into.

May I suggest a nice piece of 5" or 6" iron pipe, sunk a minmum of 3 feet in the ground and then filled with concrete (like a sonotube form). thats what stopped the little 17 year old bast***s from knocking mine down at our old house. Its what also cuased a tow truck to arrive at my house early(3am) one sat. morn to extract their little lifted jeep from my mailbox (he had a bumper replacement brush guard and just thought he was bad) I did not prosecute, I got ahold of their fathers, and had a free lawn service for the rest of the year.

If I caught the SOB, I would press charges ive put my mailbox up too many times for it to get messed up. I miss getting my mail at my house! I might put it back up, but this time it will be the hardest to knock over, or destroy. Using the best construction skills i could to make it so they messed themselves up trying to mess up my box.

If you're in drive and idle is being pulled down when stopped, and you place it in Neutral, does the idle spike up to 1000RPM or more before settling back down to normal Idle? Mine was doing that and I found out that it was my TC going out. A sprag gear was letting go. I was getting some other symptoms also like a squeek at times when it shifts in the lower gears (in the hotter tunes). Got the TC replaced and it been good ever since.

I would put up a "Fake" mail box and fill the mail box full of Cement. So if he drives thru it, the mail box will go thru his wind shield, or if he is smashing it with a baseball bat or something, the pressure shock will go back to his arms.

White Buffalo and Dave, thanks for the replies. Yes that's exactly the symtoms that I'm having. I'll have to try shifting it to nuetral when coming to a stop. I haven't tried this yet. But even when I start the engine in the morning with (remote start) to let it warm up, I can hear it in the driveway doing it also. The idle goes up and down then it'll even out alittle and then it'll do it agian up and down. The TC doesn't rattle at all either. I just got my Tranny done about 7-months ago too. Ats TC. Which doesn't necessarily mean it's not or can't be the TC. How many times have we all bought something new just to have it go out or bad, just as quick. HAH HAH. How would me hitting the brakes in the drive at an idle, tie into this though? It's kinda confusing to me. Thats why I figured that a stuck valve in the Steering pump, sounded right on. I guess a trip to the tranny builder is par for the course right now, as I need to get my fulid changed anyhow. Thanks agian guys. Oh yeah my first thought on this too. "Mail Box Recipe"; 6"-OD X 1/2 Thickness pipe, buried 3 ft in the ground, fill with concrete, and paint brown. To look like a wood pole. There's your recipe John. A recipe for disaster, for somebody. HEE HEE. Country
