ok, i have a 1979 f250 with a 351m, its a 2v motocraft carb. i can pump the pedal and watch it spray fuel from one jet? into one of the barrels, but it wount start. if i spray starting fluid in it, it starts, but dosnt run... i never did anything with carbs before so this is all new to me, i have no idea whats wrong. this is the only thing holding me back from starting to drive this truck.
any ideas? any help would be greatly appriciated. i have a chiltians manual but its a different carb in the pictures, and there isnt an exploded diagram or anything to help me anyway. not even a diagnosis for crank no start.
If it's only spraying from one of the nozzles then something is stopping it up. If that is stopped up then the idle circuits are probably stopped up too and thats why it won't crank or stay running. Do a search for 2150 carb and alot of post will come up but I remember one having links to an exploded view of a 2V carb. I hope you get it worked out or you can always do like I did and buy a brand new holley 4412 carb for $250 and that will bolt right in place of your 2150. Good luck.
Here is a link to the autozone page the exploded view is almost to the bottom of the page. I'm sure someone else has a better link but that'll do for now.
well cleaned out the carb, looks like it works now. only thing is it wount start at all now.
i did leave the key on with the engine off all nite before i fixed the carb and the coil was pretty dam hot so maybe i killed the coil? it's origional one for the truck so maybe its time for it to be replaced anyway sence its got new cap rotor plugs and wires.
i replaced the coil, starts and idles for a few seconds now, then dies. i guess i didnt clean out all the jets? the 2 that spray fuel in when you pump the gas work. maybe there's another on i gotta find?
Have you tried adjusting the mixture screws on the bottom of the carb? Try backing them out a turn or two.
yes, i had a friend of mine come over that was more carb friendly lol. he adjusted the carb for me and had the truck running great. then, like a few days later it just stopped. the truck also didnt have a fuel filter on it anywhere, i just stuck it on a day or so ago. im guessing its clogged with gunk from the tank now. next year i hope to have everything for a fuel injected 460 swap, but for now, i just need it to run good enough to drive 3 miles to work.
took the carb off and cleaned it out again, this time i took it compleatly appart and cleand it. still nothing. later on tho, i got a rebuild kit for like 25$ and did that, now it runs again. it looks like one of the little diaphram pump things wasnt working, and the internal fuel filter was all clogged with stuff too.
Use some gas line dryer! After a while from condensation, from having a less than full tank. Water will build up in the tank and produce symptoms like you have, Water is not compressible and has a high surface tension if it's getting forced into things (Jets, injectors, rubber parts) It can do a lot of damage not to mention scale rust forming in tanks and lines clogging things up. A couple of bottles of dedicated gas line dryer every now and then is cheap insurance!
