could be heater core going bad.
best results with removing generally bad smells has been BG brand 'Fridgie Fresh' - about $11 Spray into the outside fresh air vents and the inside vents- while fan is on high and a/c on full for a couple of minutes.

If it's not a leaking heater core, find a repair facility that uses an ultrasonic A/C system cleaner. We use this unit. http://www.terraclean.net/newproducts.htm Been using it for about 2 months now. Appears to work exceptionally well. Make sure they replace the HVAC filter when they are done.
