Hey all!
I have an 05 Edge, 4.0, auto, 4x4, 40k that I've been extremely happy with. I just took it into the shop today for wearing the front tires wrong and got kind of floored. The truck needed 3 ball joints, one tie rod, and a "caster/camber kit". Given that I've never run it on any particularly rough roads and never off road, this surprised me a bit.
The dealer tells me that they're actually replacing ball joints on some vehicles at 15K! Is this an anomaly or have the Ford suspensions really gotten this bad? Or am I expecting too much? I beat my 89 Mustang LX 5.0 over some of the worst roads imaginable and didn't need ball joints until 75K.
Is the truck lifted or do you have aftermarket rims with the wrong backspacing? Did you ever get an alignment before this? Was everything really sloppy or just worn?
I hate it when the factory doesn't put grease fittings in. I squirt a little grease with an injector needle (wish they made them stronger!) Into all my joints. Maybe it gets to where it needs to be maybe not! I got 60k on the truck right now 2WD edge

Nope, only thing I ever changed was the tire size to 265/70/16 soon after purchase, aligned immediately after the size change. It had to have been pretty bad, it was driving quite ugly and lots of tire/road noise.
I had excess play in my right front tire that turned out to be a bad lower ball joint. Dealer replaced spindle with the ball joint under warranty. Truck has only 24,000 miles on it. I would raise the tires off ground and check for up and down as well as side to side play. I would be surprised if you needed all the items stated by repair shop that gave you the estimate. Bad shocks can also cause uneven wear. Are they the originals? I would take to another repair shop for another estimate. They may be trying to pad the bill.
