My truck doesn't have a tachometer, and it'd be useful when diagnosing things and when I let manual transmission newbies drive my truck. I tried to install an AutoGage tachometer a while ago, but it didn't work no matter which tachometer lead I went off of. I'm gonna wind up selling it to somebody who wants it.
So, my next attempt is a little more simple. Instead of installing an aftermarket tachometer, I'm just gonna install a factory gauge cluster with a tachometer. That way, all I just have to do is plug it in and bolt it in place, (I found a tachometer lead ((tan with yellowish strip)) going to the cluster I've got now, and it isn't being used).
My only question is this: is an Explorer panel from this year interchangeable with a Ranger panel. All the clues I'm seeing say "yes", but I just want to make sure with some of you guys before I spend money on one.
My 95 Ranger 5 speed didn't have a tach either when I got it 5 years ago. I put a cluster out of a 96 Ranger with tach and automatic, just replaced the shift indicator with the black cover plate. 4 years and 120,000 miles later it still worked when I sold it. Not sure of the Ranger/Explorer differences. I bought mine on Ebay for around 20 bucks.
