I have an 85 F150 2WD (auto), and I've been told by 2 different people that Ford used the C-6 behind the 300 because of the torque and towing capacities. Anyone know if this is true?. What I'd also like to know is if I find a 4wd with a 300 and a 3 speed auto from an early to mid eighties truck, would it also be a C-6?. If this is also true, I'd like to locate one to replace the crappy AOD in my son's 86 F150 4X4. If it fits the 300, it will fit his 351W.
Thanks
they were common in at least the vans.

Some info on these sites about making the aod more stout, as well as their products.
I've driven 300/c6 combos. Give me another gear, please....
I'm on my second AOD in 1 year. I have $2300 into this one, and now it's screwing up. It only took me $3400 to realize they are junk. Can you build one to run behind an 800hp big block?, yes, but it won't last long no matter what you do to it. At least with the C-6, you can beat on it and it will hold up much longer. I'm not putting it behind a 300, it's going into the F150 in my signature. With 35's, I won't miss the OD

Sorry, I should have figured that all out from your first post. Hint: If you get the same guy to work on your C6 that did your AOD, it won't last much longer. Doesn't your trans guy stand behind his work?

First AOD I bought off of EBAY (the shop was only 40 miles from me) for $900, and it was set up with 4R70W lower 1st gear in it. It had a 1 year warranty. 4 months after installing it, it started hanging up, and not shifting. The guy shipped me another valve body, and that didn't work. The next couple of times I called him, I got his voice mail, and finally got a message that the phone was disconnected. I drove to his shop, and it was closed up. I then took the original AOD to a local shop (reputable in this area). They rebuilt it to the tune of $1780, but this time I had them install it in the truck. 2 months later, it stopped shifting altogether (only had low). Took it back, and they said a bolt loosened up on the governer, fixed it, and everything should be ok. 2 months after that, it stopped shifting again, so I took it back, and they advised me that the tranny had been abused off road, and they would not warranty it (I built the truck for my Son, I do not drive it). Another $600 later and it was back on the road. Now it doesn't shift to 2nd until 35mph. I plan to take it back, but it will be a year old in Oct, and I need a more permanrnt fix. I've owned probably 25 different Fords, with C-4s, C-6s and FMXs, and never had this much trouble. After browsing the web, and taking my own experiences into consideration, I'm convinced the AOD is only good for crusing to mall, not for hi-po applications. As I stated before, you can build them up, but they are a time bomb waiting to explode. I need something reliable like the C-6 I have behind the 460 in my swamp buggy. It pushes 4 - 56" tractor tires in mud, water and thick brush, and has done so for 8 years with no problems.
It appears they replace all kinds of stuff, and only use cores from '88 up etc. I'd guess not enough stuff was done to yours in the first place, but for that money it should have been all redone.
I looked a the 4x4 trans. $2200 approx for an AOD, $1300 approx for a C6. Seems like a high price for an extra gear... Not as much as a Gear Vendors I guess, but it seems to reflect the need to swap out most of the AOD internals vs. just rebuilding a C6 with some tighter shifts and clutches. Note they never mention more than 450 horse for an AOD but mention "up to 600.." for a C6.
Anyway, good luck with whatever you do.
And yea, you can flog a C6. The one in the old man's '66 wagon was still working when he sold it 10 or 12 years after I left home and it stopped getting neutral started and forced downshifted, not that anyone I knew did that to it....
