scottjo,

Looks like you are already on to this, but the easiest way to get the CG location is to get the weights on the axles with the vehicle resting normally, then incline it as much as possible and get the weights on the support points. Sum the moments about the supports and you can get the CG offset from the load shift. This is how the SAE accident reconstruction types, etc., usually do it.

The best way to do this is with an overhead crane and a high-capacity hanging scale in between the hook on the crane and the bumper (or whatever) on your truck. I would support the truck at the bumpers and lift each end. There are probably a number of scales around the University that will work. (I would look in the ME and CE departements.) The scales are available with 5000 lb capacity accurate to +/- 5 lb. (for example, see http://www.mcmaster.com/ page 1501)

Sounds like a great class. Have you looked at the program SMAC? SMAC dates back to the early 70's and is still in use as a forensic tool.

the scale I worked at was/is calibrated by the State of MN and is in increments of 20 lbs. A flicker between numbers meant to add 10 lbs. It's a "TOLEDO" scale. But like I said it's calibrated. A driver could stand on one side and pick up on the bumper to buy him 500 lbs, lol.
