hey yall,
for some unknown reason the first of this week the truck started producing blue smoke while running and a slight knocking sound is comming through what used to be a healthy diesel sound. All my power is there and all the vital signs(that I know of) are good. I was thinkin mabye it is bad fuel. the only thing I have done different is use diesel kleen mixed to specified proportions but did not run it on this tank. Very concerned.... any suggestions???
crack the injection lines loose one at a time and see if the noise or smoke changes on any particular cylinder. Try to narrow it down to which hole the problem is and go from there.
thanx for the reply catfish,
I am new to this and dont know what you mean by blowby. sorry for the inexperience, but I really dont have any other means for reference than this forum about how to tweak this truck. It is also my sole vehicle so I am worried tht I am putting more stress on it by running under these conditions. So you are saying the knocking is probably a cylinder/piston problem and I need to narrow it down to which one ?
thanx for the patience
Cracking the injectors will let you know if you have a bad/going bad injector. The engine won't make any change in noise when you crack the line for the bad injector(s). When you crack a line on a good injector it'll change the sound of the engine.
I'd also pull your CDR (on the back of the air intake, coupla bolts, pulls out of a plug) and clean it out. Mine smoked blue pretty good when I first got it home. The CDR cleanout & burning B100 has cleared that completely up.
Blowby is compression that has moved past the pistons. All engines will have some. Take the oil fill cap off the motor. Start it. You will see some vapor coming out at an idle which is normal and is actually good. You want that vapor out. It can be nasty stuff. The of vapor you will see depends on the moisture in the crankcase. If you see it puffing in rhythm with the engine then you have an issue.
My step dad suggested pouring dexron trans fluid into my tank to clear up the ticking sound. Is this a good idea?? I have never heard this and it sounds strange. I havent tried cracking the injection lines yet but you would think if the sound was a valve or piston malfunction it would have already blown up, so would a bad injector cause such a sound if any sound at all. I will also check for blowby. If there is too much blowby what issues are presumed catfish101?
It is actually possible to run these engines off of strait automatic transmission fluid with no ill effects. ATF has much better lubricity than todays diesel, and also has lots of cleaners and other goodies in it. It is very common to use if as a fuel aditive to help the injection system last longer and it also produces a better burn.
So, in short, yes it is worth a try to feed it some ATF.
And, yes, a bad injector can cause audible sounds and smoke if its not working properly.
