To be quite frank, it was this one;

Is Being Engaged Really That Important? Long Story...

I don't mean to personally hurt the author's feelings ....

Had I seen the one you mentioned I might have just turned my computer off right then and there.....

Really, spelling is not that big an issue. I'm sure most of you have seen that email floating around with all the words misspelled, only the first and last letters in their proper place. I can read those quite easily, I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing....

I think what is most important in this issue is composition. Grouping thoughts well, keeping things flowing and interesting for the reader. It can mean the difference between a good anecdote or a great one. It can make technical information exponentially easier to read and comprehend.

If it's worth doing isn't it worth doing right?

I agree. If I 'walk' into a thread and see that it is just one large paragraph, or if it looks like it was written by a pre-teen (lik, that wuz so kool 2, ic, bc...or any of thoes other short-hand words), then I will usually back right up and go to another thread.

I've been a member here for what?...Going on 5 years now I think. But I never typed like that when I was 15-16. I always presented myself as an educated adult, and it helped when asking questions (I got more/better answers), and when helping someone else (I didn't come off as a kid pulling stuff from my behind).

What happened to the "knee in the throat" post? It appears to be locked down and all traces of it ever existing have been destroyed. I guess someone kneed the crap out of the post right when it was getting silly. Either that or nobody wanted to hear what I had to say anymore.

To add to this post....I argee thet ppl shud lern to communucat like they, like, dun had sum skoolin. Like. I really hate when people, like, use the word, like, "like" every other, like, word. Maybe I'm an old fart, too. Who had the offer of Ensure?

No, it's not just you. I too have a harder time reading a long post that's just one big block of words. That's why I always break my posts into sections...paragraphs, if you will.

I grew up with an English teacher for a mother and she pretty well drilled spelling, and punctuation into my head...not that all of it took, but I do reasonably well.

But while I do prefer to read posts with proper language use, I realize too that it's low priority for many people, and that for some the priority is simply to get their message out. Though it's a bit difficult to get that message when the reader can't make heads nor tails of what's being said, or if the grammar is so bad that people won't even bother to read the post because they don't want to spend the time wading through it and deciphering it. For the most part, I think the users here do a pretty good job of finding a middle ground. It's not often I simply give up on a post because I just can't get through it without my head exploding...but it does happen!

And don't forget; what we write here will be floating around in cyberspace for all to see as for as long as there's an Internet, so you may want to choose those words carefully...

The 'endless paragraph' style is very difficult to read.

There was a user on FTE that would capitalize the first letter of every single word when he posted. That was incredibly difficult to read, at least for me!

I'm glad you brought up capitalization......

I HAVE TROUBLE READING A POST IN WHICH EVERY WORD IS CAPITALIZED!!!...I ALSO HAVE THE FEELING THAT I'M BEING YELLED AT!!!.....I HATE THAT!!!....I WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP CAPITALIZING SO MUCH!!!.....STOP IT!!!...FROM WHAT I REMEMBER, THE FIRST WORD OF EVERY SENTENCE; AND PROPER NOUNS, SHOULD BE CAPITALIZED ONLY!!!....PLEASE STOP!!!!!!!

i think it'd be easier to read posts if your connection wasn't being lagged by a video ad in EVERY thread... but then, that's just me. i feel WAY sorry for the people still stuck on dial up becuz my dsl is getting a kick in the pants from it as it is... *shrug*

so yeah.. not really concerned with punctuation at this point

I've read that it's because your brain is not use to seeing that (same with capitalizing first letter of every word) and doesn't know what to do with it.

You know the thing that has the first and last letter in the right place, but the rest mixed up...It says that's because your mind only sees the first and last letters in order, but when it's all caps it looks at every letter (because it's not use to seeing that) that's why it's harder to read...

That could be way off, I just read it and it sounded good to me...

Tim

Ah-If only some of my students who think the ability to communicate clearly, either verbally or in writing, is not important would read this thread.

I was the same way when I was in school (Only been out for about 2 months), I figured I would be getting into a trade and the need to be able to communicate cleary would be used but not very much, it didn't matter to me though because I knew that I was able to do it anyways. Now that I'm looking over job postings for trades (diesel mechanic particularly) they ALL say that you need to be able to communicate cleary both verbally and in writing.
