Drove home from the lake yesterday and my overdrive " off " light started flashing and wouldn't go off! Even though when I push the button I feel the up (or down) shift. Any ideas? 93 f350 idi turbo 4x2 126mi c/c. Thanks.

Flashing OD light is the computer telling you that there is something wrong. You need to pull the fault code that the computer hase stored, this is your first line of defence in preventing transmission damage.
In many cases the computer will also go into failsafe mode, which maxes out the line pressure and makes it shift hard.
Faults that cause the light from my chart are: FIPL open or short circut, trans fluid temp over 270*, Manual shift lever postion sensor out of adjustment, etc., as David85 said, any other operational problems such as harsh shifts etc. Get the codes read ASAP, is best advice.

obd2 didnt come out till 1996,part store should have a cheap ford tool that has a flashing light type thing where you count the flashes,at autozone it is 25 bucks.

Darn-it, I meant to say OBD1, guess I was too tired when I posted....my bad.
Hard shifting is normally the FIPL out of adjustment. On the drivers side of the injector pump, sensor with three wires tells the PCM what the throttle position is. With Key on truck off, a good voltmeter ground to battery, positive on a paper clip or wire slipped in along side of the middle wire on the connector (all still connected). At idle position should read 1.05 - 1.1 V, and then at Wide open throttle should read about 3.8 but no more than 4.3V. Check for complete range between the two positions with no dead spots.
BTW, Ford recommends changing that sensor every 60K miles FWIW.
to test the system you must hold the throttle wide open for the test or you will receive a hard fault code for the fipl sensor ,my bet is there is a code 62 for excessive converter slip
