6.0 L diesel issues?
6.0 L diesel issues?
Was listening to a talk radio show on the weekend topic was best and worst vehicle ever owned. A fellow called in to say his '05 F250 with the 6.0 L was the worst he'd ever owned. He went on to claim he's had to have $30,000 in repairs done and it still isn't running right. He further claims that Ford and International are suing each other over this motor and all the issues relating to it. I searched the forums and can't find any other threads on this. Is the guy blowing smoke cuz he got a lemon or is there an issue? I ask because I was looking at getting one to install a 5th wheel to pull a travel trailer.
The 6L Powerstroke had some issues out of the gate. The 03-04 motors had some problems that were worked out in the 05 and up models. That doesnt mean that the newer motors cant have a problem, but the 06 and up motors have been very good. As far as the International vs Ford thing, that has happened. I am going to try and get this right so here it goes: Ford sued International over not sharing the warrenty costs of the 6L Powerstroke and unjustifyingly raised the price of the new 6.4L motors. International then sued Ford over breach of contract b/c ford is in developement of its own inhouse diesels that will be ready for production before there contract with International is up. I hope i got that part right. If not, someone please correct. That guys problem sounds more like a bad service department than a bad truck. It sounds like that dealer was just throwing parts at a problem w/out proper diagnosis. I love my 6L Powerstroke and would definately tell someone else to buy one. If you are buying a used on, get an oasis report and test drive it good, then get back with us on the forum to see what you have found. Good luck

I work for the New York City Fire Dept. Command vehicles had been GMC diesel powered Suburbans for years until GM dropped the diesel engine option. At that point the Fire Dept. switched to diesel powered Excursions. My office has a 2005. Since October of 2005 it has been out of service for 5 or 6 times for several weeks at a clip because the car would not start. No one seems to know what the problem is. Since these cars are still under warantee they are sent back to Ford instead of being repaired in house. You can pass many Ford dealers around the city and see several FDNY Excursions on their lots awaiting repairs. I would say there is a seriuos problem with these engines. I also heard GM will once again offer a diesel on their Suburbans/Yukon XL. I'm sure the FD will go back to GM if that is true.

i got a chance to drive a 98 chevy 2500 this week with the 6.5L turbo diesel. let me tell you if it were not for the chance that i saw the turbo when i popped the hood to check the oil, (and the diesel clatter at idle upon start up) i honestly would have never known it was a diesel. there was absolutely no lag. it really felt like i was driving one of the fuel trucks with a 350 gasser in it. they ran the same power wise, they felt the exact same pulling away from a stop. It was nowhere near as powerful as my 6.0, but it was actually refreshing to drive a turbo diesel that felt so driveable around town. it was my first time driving the 6.5 and i can't believe the bad press it got, i wish i'd have known a long time ago, i would have got that motor in all the chevy's i used to own.
dont get me wrong, i wouldnt trade my powerstroke for anything, but it was a fun little truck to drive. sorry to hijack guys.

that new 4.5L v8 turbo diesel for the chevy half tons coming actually is an impressive "little" motor. early estimates put it at 310 HP and 520TQ...
the exhaust valves and exhaust manifold are in the "V" where the intake manifold would normally go, and the intake manifold goes around the motor and goes into what normally be the exhaust valves. i'm not here to praise chevy guys, just read the article and it's still fresh in my mind. i enjoy all things diesel, but i love my SUPERDUTY
