the other day, i started hearing a squeak/creak from underneath the rear of my truck....thought it was the 2 week old hitch rubbing on the exhaust....fixed that....
now it appears to have to do with the drivetrain. BUT, it's only when the tranny is in D-2-1, not R. if i'm rolling/idling forward and put her in N, the squeak stops...put back in D, it comes back...but again, not in R.
what the heck could this be????
truck will be at the dealer (forgive me) for an A/C service call/leak and i hate to have them troubleshooting it.
U-joints will squeak if they need lubrication. They can also clunk when shifting from D to R. You can check by disconnecting the driveshaft at the differential and moving it so as to flex the joint. The joint should move smoothly in any direction without binding or roughness. The joint roller bearings will be loaded on the opposite side (which may be not so dry) in R. Old pinion seals used to squeak when they were cold. [That was a trip down the memory path, as it occurred in at least 57 and 59 models when they were new...]

Reason: add info

wondering if it's the yoke, at the front of the driveshaft, that needs lube? when i spoke with the service manager, he said it should squeek in reverse too...and even if in N but rolling, it would be turning???
I definitely think the left rear axle seal is shot...going to be an expensive day at the dealer, including the AC.
then why is it only in D-2-1 and not in R or N???????
wouldn't they squeak then???
thanks in advance.
Probably because of the way the damaged needle bearings are loaded in the cups. Try putting it in neutral on a flat surface (no load on the driveshaft), with the motor off. Crawl under and try and turn the driveshaft with your hand, also try and move the driveshaft up and down at the joints. There should be no play in the joints whatsoever. Usually once the joint starts to squeak, the bearings are shot and the jount has slop in it. You can also try greasing the joints and see if the squeak goes away?.

thanks...i'm sure you are right...and since they are so rusted, i'm assuming they have to be pressed out and pressed back in....something i'll let the dealer worry about...
just got done moving 16-18 cubic yards of topsoil and trying to get ready for the wedding....
some things, i will just have to pay for convenience
it's the rear ujoint...told them while they have the axle out to lube the yoke....
and they still insist that the tierods are shot, even though two independents say they are fine...and now the lower ball joints.
and since the E-brake has never been used (and the shoes removed years ago) the actuators are seized and they want to replace those....at the same time they are replacing the leaking left rear axle seal...so much for the fresh Amsoil i put in.

and that's without telling me what's up with the bad A/C
