Can someone tell me what happend?
I have a 99 f250 PS. I pull a 30 foot enclosed when my buddies and I go for weekends of hobbies. I admitt I do not keep up on the fluid levels like I should and think I may have been low on tranny fluid before I ever left this time.
Anyway we are going caving in Arkansas this weekend south of Harrison on 7 (big hills and truns) we get about 2 miles from our usuall campsite (on a gravel road thankfully) and I notice some slippiage well I get out and look under the truck and it is pukeing out all the tranny fluid (real Hot and at a good rate) so we spend the night on the side of the road and next day I put some fluid back in it along with some Lucas stuff and have my cousin pull the trailer on to the campsite. I figure I might be able to make it there before the fluid runs out again.
Well to my suprise it has not leaked again. I had the trailer pulled back near Branson Missouri, but then I hooked back on to it and pulled it all the way back to Harrisonville Missouri (good 3 1/2 hour drive) and still no leakage.
So I am wondering is there some kind of a relief valve if the tranny overheats or should I expect more trouble soon?
this is one of the reasons i bought a truck with a manual transmission.
there is a vent tube on the top of the transmission that will puke fluid when it gets too hot and bubbly. when it starts doing that, the best thing you can do is stop and let it cool down for an hour or two.
it's a good idea to have a transmission temp guage if you're going to tow.
Again I want to thank all of you for the help. I don't get on here as much as I should, but when I do I always get the help I need.
I have a little over 130k on the 99 now and I am thinking about putting some money in it. It is totally stock, and I am going to be looking for some suggestions on what to start with.
Thanks again everyone
Joe
When the torque converter gets really hot the hub seal relaxes and fluid starts pouring out. The only way fluid is going to come out of the vent is if the trans is overfilled.
Once the seal cools it usually will stiffen and start working again. It's not going to go back and forth too many times, so you need to make sure this doesn't happen again or you'll need to pull the trans and replace the seal. You can buy and aftermarket seal that is a lot better than the Ford seal.
You ran into problems because the '99 doesn't have enough cooling. They were built without a cooler in the radiator. Either change to a radiator with a cooler inside, keeping the original air to oil cooler in series, or change the air to oil already on the truck to a cooler from a 6.0L truck. That one is WAY bigger than what you have and will keep the torque converter from getting that hot again.
I have a 1996 7.3 - was towing up a steep grade in 2nd gear w/o OD.....tranny puked out all the fluid. I stopped, hitched a ride about 50 miles to neared parts shop, picked up new pan gasket, filter, and fluid, thinking maybe the pan gasket blew. Got back to the truck, did the work, put the new fluid in. No leaks until the last quart.....then it just pissed out of somewhere high on the bell housing....what looked like at least a quart, no more than two. I checked the fluid level, showed full. Buddy got his truck and towed my trailer back to the house, while I drove in front.....ran just fine. Shifted through all the gears perfectly. Truck has sat for two days now, and I notice little drips of fluid....not a whole lot, but still a minor drip. Is this the torque converter gasket?
I am worried that the leak came from high enough up on the bell housing that I couldn't see where from......Suggestions?
I am somewhat mechanically inclined, but have never messed with a tranny.....
