I have a science fair coming up and does anybody got any ideas i can do with my diesel truck for it. I have an 03 6.0 PSD. I was thinking of improving the aerodynamics of it and seeing if there are any mpg improvements. Thats just an idea but if anyone has anything else i am open to ideas?
you could make some bio diesel to show people that homebrewed fuel will work in your truck. run it on strait bio or blend it with diesel, whatever you want. i never did good in science class, had to drop out of chemistry in high school, but have made secsessful small batches. its not that hard and is somthing scientific that has to deal with diesel powered trucks. if your interested look down in the Alternative Diesel Fuel Forum
Don't you have change a lot of stuff on the truck to run biodiesel or no. Sounds like a good one though if it doesn't require 500$ and 10,000 hrs of time.
you don't need to change anything on the truck, at most maybe you fuel filters if they haven't been changed lately or if you truck has a lot of miles. for a few hours of you time and 5-10 bucks you can make a really small batch. this is the easiest/cheapest method http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/makingasmallbatch/ i would recomend
i would think mpg's and egt's would be the easiest to compare unless you have access to a dino. my personal findings are mpg's and etg's are pretty much the same. i have read some posts in the Bio Forum and people have posted that they have lower egt's by 100 degs or so when useing biodiesel vs. diesel #2. maybe something to to look into. be sure to post if you find anything cool out.
If you can get access to a dyno and an emissions analyser another route you may want to go is water injection. Just to see power gains vs emissions. You could also evaluate it in the same manner discussed above, mpg and EGTs.
