Transmission

My tranny isnt shiftin right i have down to shift into 2nd then back up to drive kinda like it was a stick then it still doesnt always work other times itll just rev up pretty high then pretty much slam into gear. I can also start it in any gear and run thru the gears w/o it bein turned over. Do I need a new tranny or steering colmn or both, if so what size (tranny) do i need? '71 F-100 sport custom 360. Thanx

Check to see if your modulator valve vacuum hose is not soft and collasped. There should not be any oil in the hose. Fuel vapors makes this hose goes away. Check to make sure your linkage is adjusted properly. If I recall that the same symptoms my had before it failed and needed rebuilding. The seals just wore/dried (hard) out with age. These are rather simple transmission and are not expensive to rebuild.

As for starting in any gear, that switch is located on the column under the dash. Normally it prevents it from starting not the other way around. Do take a look.

Fluids change can help if its has excessive miles, smells burnt, and dark.
